The Town Manager is the Chief Executive Officer for the Town of Bennington. Appointed by the Bennington Select Board, this individual oversees all town operations, including all staff. The manager’s primary duties consist of budget management, department manager supervision, state reporting, and strategic direction for municipal services.
In addition to these duties, the Town Manager’s Office has a number of special projects that it champions. These include the Bennington In Bloom program, a downtown planting program, membership in the Bennington County Solid Waste Alliance (BCSWA), a county-wide organization that oversees our collective waste management programs, and various multi-agency collaborations.
In all, the manager’s job is to ensure that the residents and businesses of Bennington are provided with the municipal services that are needed to enhance quality of life for all. This is done through partnerships, innovation, and a commitment to the greater good.

History of Town Managers
The Bennington Town Office building was originally the Henry G. Root homestead built c. 1844. In 1920, his descendants transferred the building to the Town for municipal purposes. In 1969 the Town & Village of Bennington merged and Edward Lamb was hired as the first Town manager.
