Citizen Police Academy

The Bennington Police Department is excited to announce the creation of the Bennington Police Department Citizen Police Academy!

On behalf of Bennington Police Chief, Paul Doucette, we invite you to apply to the Bennington Police Department Citizen Police Academy.  Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 2024 Citizen Police Academy, scheduled to start on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.


This free interactive ten-week training informational program is designed to provide insight into law enforcement and a working knowledge of the values of the Bennington Police Department.  Participants learn about the unique challenges faced by law enforcement as they take part in education and real-life scenarios that require split-second decision making.

Taught by Benington Police Department personnel and guest instructors, instruction has been designed to inform students about various topics to include:

  • Criminal and Motor Vehicle Law
  • Investigations/Crime Scene
  • Professional Standards/Code of Conduct
  • Community Policing
  • K9 and Animal Control
  • Crisis Worker and Community Resource Specialists
  • Use of Force and De-escalation
  • Communications

This ten-week course begins on March 6, 2024, and continues each subsequent Wednesday evening from 
5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Bennington Fire Facility located on River Street in Bennington.

Bennington Citizen Police Academy is a unique opportunity to increase communication and understanding between citizens and police through education and hands on experience.

This course is limited to those who reside in the Town of Bennington, Village of Old Bennington and Village of North Bennington.  Applicants should complete the application and return it to the Bennington Police Department at 118 South Street, Bennington, VT  05201.
