637The Bennington Police Department offers excellent benefits, provides all uniforms and police equipment. We have, or participate in, special units such as B.C.I. (Detective Division), bicycle patrol, snowmobile patrol and School Resource Officer. We are in the process of developing a mental health crisis response team. The Department also actively participates in many community-oriented events utilizing the staff and members of the Bennington Police Association.

This is a Union position with starting wage, after probationary period is complete, in the area of $56,180 and enters a step system per the working agreement. Pay is augmented by occasional overtime and special-duty opportunities. In addition, those holding EMT certification, Associate, Bachelor or Master's degrees in law enforcement are eligible for an additional yearly stipend of up to $750. The Town of Bennington offers four personal holidays, vacation time increasing to six weeks depending on years of service, participation in the Vermont Municipal Employees Retirement System Plan C, life insurance, twelve paid sick days, eleven paid holidays, short term and long term disability. Employees may also select to participate in a variety of plans which include an excellent BCBS health insurance program, 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, and a dental and vision plan as well as several other programs. In addition, for full-time officers participating in the health care plan, the Town offers the opportunity for those retiring at 50 with 20 years of service to continue coverage with the Town contributing up to 80% of the cost of a single person plan (with certain stipulations) until reaching the age of 65.

Requirements: U.S. citizen, minimum age of 21; must have a valid driver's license; high school diploma (college degree preferred). Applicant must be able to perform all the essential functions involved with police duties. Police testing, including a physical fitness examination, polygraph, oral board, medical exam, fingerprint check and extensive background check will be required of applicants selected for hire. All shifts, weekends and holiday work is a must when scheduled.
